Daylight saving time in 2017 in Europe will take place on Sunday, October 29. Ukrainians will set the clock back one hour.

In 2017, the clock will be transferred from Saturday to Sunday, October 29, at 4 a.m., the website informs. The clock hands should be moved back an hour, so people will have more time to sleep.

In the 17th century, the famous politician Benjamin Franklin during a visit to Paris noticed that people used a huge number of candles and began to think about how people could save an expensive resource. As a result, he came to the conclusion that changing the time by just an hour would save a huge number of candles.

After a satirical essay about the need to switch to summer and then winter time, more and more scientists from around the world began to come to a conclusion. that this is simply a necessary condition for a successful economy.

Then, Germany and England officially switched to summer time in 1916 in order to save energy: in the spring, the hands of all the clocks moved forward an hour and returned back in the fall. Since then, more than one hundred countries have begun to translate watches.

It is worth noting that from time to time, different countries either refuse to transfer time, or return to this tradition.

The system of summer and winter time in Europe was introduced at the beginning of the last century. Despite the fact that modern technologies have repeatedly confirmed that this step is not a way to save electricity, and leading doctors speak of a violation of human biorhythms, European states continue to switch to winter and summer time.

So far, the clock hands are being translated: Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Ukraine, Estonia.

Change of time from winter to summer and vice versa is carried out in accordance with the directive European Unionrequiring all member states to comply with this law. On an EU scale, this happens simultaneously on the last Sunday of March (when the clock moves forward one hour) and the last Sunday of October (transfer one hour ago).

Note that in different countries this happens at different times, since in Europe, the transition to winter time is not carried out according to local time, but according to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), more precisely, according to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

For example, Londoners will set the clock at two in the morning local time, and the inhabitants of Germany, France and Italy at three in the morning. Citizens of Turkey, Greece and Finland will be able to sleep an hour longer only after four in the morning.

In total, 78 countries use the transition to “summer” and “winter” time in one form or another.

In Russia, from 1917 and during the Soviet era, they either introduced the practice of translating arrows, then canceled. In 2011, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev canceled the seasonal watch change. Since then, the Russians no longer translate the clock.

The clock is moved so that people can work longer and use less artificial light. The idea of \u200b\u200btranslation is economic and optimizing in nature.

The positions of doctors on the “watch issue” diverged somewhat: some believe that changing the watch twice a year does not in any way affect a person’s well-being, while others hold the exact opposite opinion.

It’s good to be a pensioner - we didn’t even know when the transition to winter time will be in 2017 in Estonia and this was good news.

Good time of day! With you, Victor Dulin.

I learned about the fact that there was another transition to winter time only by the pleasing difference in time on mechanical kitchen watches in comparison with our smartphones, tablets and notebooks.
On all this electronics, the switch to winter time is automatic.
When on the last Sunday of October the 29th, at 4 o’clock in the morning with pleasure I switched the hands an hour ago, and it became 3 o’clock in the morning, I was again glad.
Now every day of rainy autumn you can lie in a warm bed for an hour longer and breakfast is delayed by the same amount - this certainly amuses not only us, but also all working and students.
Since in Russia the switch to winter time was the last and last time in 2016, the economic benefits that the switch to winter time brings in 2017 will have to be evaluated using the example of countries in Europe.
We’ll look only in France alone - the Ministry of Ecological Transformations; only 2009 economic data were published, which justified the next transition to winter time.

The transition to winter time in 2017 is justified by three facts of 2009.

  1. It saved 440 gigawatt-hours, and this is the annual lighting of 800 thousand houses.
  2. 44 thousand tons of carbon dioxide were not emitted from the pipes into the atmosphere.
  3. After 20 years, CO2 emissions will be half as much.

In almost all countries of the European Union, twice a year, residents began to change the clock hands back in the early 80s.
However, this was done at different times,

At the same time, the switch to winter time interfered with:

  • money transfers
  • work of transport
  • means of communication.

For these reasons, at the level of the European Parliament and the Council of Europe, in 1998 it was decided to switch to winter time at the same time: on the last Sunday of October at 3 a.m. and the last Sunday of March at 2 a.m. respectively.

The root cause of the transition to winter time was the energy crisis.

The very first experienced the transition to winter time, zealous owners in post-war Ireland and the UK.
In 1966, Italy followed the example of foggy Albion.
In France, the switch to winter time began in 1976.
In the USSR, the clock began to be translated later than all - in 1981.

Now more than 110 countries are transitioning to winter time.

Why is the modern daylight saving time not justified?

After all, this is not just a translation of the shooter, even though simultaneous throughout Europe.
Domestic and agricultural animals and birds do not accept the transition to winter time - they are supposed to be fed, watered and milked at the same time, regardless of energy, economic, political and other crises.
So it turns out that the health of these creatures is higher than ours ???

Yet worst consequences Daylight saving time is turning around.

Arguments of opponents of the transition to winter time in 2017.

  • Human health is paramount.
  • Broken biological rhythm and especially in children.
  • Interferes with work in the agricultural sector.
  • Creates traffic jams.
  • Increases the number of car rides on pedestrians by 47%.

Switching to winter time has a negative impact on health, and there are a number of supporting arguments and recommendations for physicians.

Switching to winter time in 2017 - how to prepare the body?

  • Take a contrast shower in the morning.
  • Consume 200 ml of yogurt or kefir daily
  • Before going to bed do gymnastics.

Daylight saving time - recommendations for two weeks before and after?

  • Control your diet.
  • Exclude alcohol.
  • Do not eat smoked sausage and bacon.
  • Do not eat fried foods.

Therefore, the seasonal time change in some countries has already been canceled.

On the night of Saturday to Sunday, October 28, 2018, the EU countries will synchronously switch their hands an hour ago. Most likely, they will do it the last time. Based on the results of the referendum, the European Commission decided that since 2019, the clock will no longer be transferred.

Until April 2019, each EU country must decide for how long it remains - winter or summer. There are fears that the picture of time zones in the European Union will change randomly. On the other hand, it can, on the contrary, be harmonized if neighboring countries agree with each other.

Who invented this?

At the equator of the earth all year round the same day and night duration is maintained: 12 hours each. There are no problems with sleep disturbances, energy conservation, and so on. In winter, sunrise and sunset occur almost at the same time as in summer. Unfortunately, at other latitudes this is not so. Due to the inclination of the earth's axis 23.44 ° solstices and equinoxes occur at different times of the year. In other words, in the northern hemisphere, a summer day is longer than a winter day.

The idea was noticed in England, where aristocrat and businessman William Willet became its main propagandist. In 1907, with his own money, he published and distributed the pamphlet “On the Wasting of Daylight” (the English “The Waste of Daylight”). According to his proposal, the clock should be changed every Sunday of April to 20 minutes at 2 a.m. (only 80 minutes for April), and on Sundays of September - should be translated in the same way in the opposite direction. This will save England £ 2.5 million in lighting costs.

Purely scientific ideas from "nerds" rarely attract the attention of influential political circles. But in this case it happened. Perhaps William Willet’s acquaintance at the golf club - parliamentarian William Pierce - presented the idea in the British Parliament on February 12, 1908, but it was not accepted, although Willlet promoted it until his death in 1915.

The first officially entered summer time German Empire and its ally Austria-Hungary during World War I with the goal of saving coal in war time. This momentous event occurred on April 30, 1916.

Great Britain and allies instantly followed the example of the enemy. Russia and several other countries waited until next year, and the United States introduced daylight saving time in 1918.

After the war, most countries refused to change the watch, but with the outbreak of World War II, it again began to be used almost everywhere.

IN last years several countries canceled daylight saving time, including Russia and Belarus in 2011. But in Russia, the reform caused complaints of the population about the darkness in the morning, so the summer time was canceled in 2014. The transfer of arrows was canceled in Argentina, Kazakhstan, Iceland, Turkey and other countries. Now the turn has come to the European Union.

Health effects

Scientific research has shown conflicting results regarding the health effects of the clock shift. Depending on the person’s place of residence and lifestyle, translating arrows can give the body more daylight, which increases the production of vitamin D. There is a study that speaks of the benefits of translating arrows for people suffering from depression.

On the other hand, the switch of arrows increases the risk of heart attack by 10%, disrupts sleep and reduces its effectiveness. Human biorhythms get confused and within a few weeks are tuned to a new schedule (,). Studies show that within a few weeks after the spring shift of the shooter, the number of suicides in men increases.

Sleep disorders are the main negative consequence of moving the watch, so now some doctors recommend abandoning DST (daylight saving time). In many countries, debates on this subject have been going on for decades.

Energy saving is generally called a myth: studies have shown that the cost of lighting remains virtually unchanged as a result of clock transfer. Switching to LED bulbs and smart sensors gives an order of magnitude greater savings.

The situation in Europe

In Europe, universal daylight saving time was introduced in 1996: all countries synchronously moved their hands an hour ahead on the last Sunday of March and an hour ago on the last Sunday of October. Now this rule is canceled. Tweet of the European Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc:

The transport industry has traditionally suffered the most from the switch and the need to change schedules, so the joy of Violet can be understood. She hopes that the European Parliament and national governments will quickly coordinate their actions, and calls for the start of “consultations at the state level to guarantee a coordinated approach for all EU members.”

Time Zones in the European Union

Until April 2019, each EU country must decide for how long it remains - winter or summer.

The decision of the European Commission is based on the results of an online survey in which 4.6 million people in Europe participated. It is curious that 3 million of them represented Germany, that is, the representativeness of the survey is rather dubious. However, 80% of respondents voted to cancel daylight saving time. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said on ZDF: "People want this, then we will do it." Chancellor Angela Merkel also agreed that this is a "very important issue."
